My story is a search for

peace, connection and joy.

The pandemic dramatically altered many lives and mine was no exception. I was confronted with two unexpected house moves and then the sudden loss of a close family member.

After a long period of struggle, it was time for me to recalibrate

I needed to make a change in my life and so I began to pay close attention to the things that brought me joy

Painting was one of them and another was being in nature. I opened my ears and eyes to the omnipresent birds, and the magical ability that they had to move me from a place of sadness and heaviness to a place of lightness and peace.

Our world and thoughts are overcomplex and many of us feel daily exasperation, overwhelm and anxiety. In a world so misaligned and disconnected with nature it would be strange not to.

I want to create a space of grounding beauty, peace and calm with my paintings to counteract this imbalance.

Simplicity is key. I ask myself “What do I find beautiful?” and “What will bring me joy to paint?” before I begin each new piece.

My creative experience and knowledge are wide and varied and due to this, my process brings together elements of realism, abstraction and surrealism as well as textural elements to create each unique artwork.

The joy and peace that I feel when creating these artworks is transmuted onto the canvas and subsequently to the experiencer of the artwork.

I enjoy the immediacy of recognition with these works. Different from the abstract paintings that I have created in the past, there’s a childlike spark and an uncontrollable smile that emerges in people when they see a painting of a bird, especially one that they have a deep connection with.

“Everyone likes birds. What wild creature is more accessible to our eyes and ears, as close to us and everyone in the world, as universal as a bird?”
Sir David Attenborough

I want my paintings to live with you and bring you a window of beauty, serenity and high vibrations every day. They are a conversation with you, a reminder to stop pause and come back to this moment for a while.

A reminder that there is always time for a peaceful and joyous moment.

Artist's Bio

Lucy is a contemporary artist based on the East Sussex coastline.

An unexpected move away from the city to within walking distance of the South Downs ignited her passion for painting the nature around her, especially birds. Her paintings combine figurative representations with abstract textures and surrealist symbols appealing to collectors all over the world.

Her work explores the experience beyond the visual. Lucy uses graphical symbols, particularly circles, to represent the cyclical and mystical nature of our world. Her paintings evoke an ethereal and transcendental quality, inviting viewers to look beyond the obvious and connect with the spiritual aspects of nature.

Lucy has been painting from a young age and draws inspiration from abstract, spiritual, and surreal artists of the 20th century, including Magritte, Yayoi Kusama, Hilma AF Klint, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Joan Miró. Her 20-year career as a graphic designer and illustrator has also influenced her unique painting style, blending realistic bird art with abstract symbolism.

Lucy’s artwork creates space for a conversation with the viewer, encouraging them to stop, reflect, and be present. In these challenging times, her paintings remind us to reconnect with the simplicity and resilience of nature. As she says: “Birds, with their sounds, their resilience, and grace have helped me through difficult transitional times. I have watched, listened, and painted, simplifying my focus and returning to what is important.”
